HTC One (M8) hands-on and first impressions

HTC One (M8)

How do you make the best Android smartphone of 2013 better? That was the challenge in front of HTC. Even though the One was the best designed flagship smartphone and had comparable features to its rivals, it wasn’t a commercial success. Most of the blame would go to HTC’s inability to market the smartphone and eventually price it competitively. The One had set high benchmarks and coming up with a successor that was better in every respect wasn’t going to be an easy task. Having spent some time with the One (M8), I can say that HTC has managed to come up with a better smartphone than last year’s best.

For most smartphone vendors, a successor to an existing product typically means upgrading the internal components, adding a bigger display and somehow managing to make it thinner. But that’s not how HTC rolls. It has overhauled the entire industrial design of the device, while retaining enough elements to maintain the design language. The front has the trademark BoomSound speakers, which I am told have been improved from the ones found on last year’s One and the audio is now much clearer even at higher volume levels. There’s a 5-megapixel camera on the front with a backside illuminated sensor and auto-focus, which take much better selfies than what was possible with the earlier version. The capacitive buttons have been removed from under the display and they now come on the display itself.

The 5-inch 1080p display is a visual treat – adequately bright and sharp with vivid colors. The display features Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 protective layer and possibly an oleophobic coating as well, as I couldn’t see it getting smudged by fingerprints.
